Preparing for NIH visit

Before SCREENING 1 VISIT for this study:

  • We start the screening visit at your appointment time in the Pediatric Clinic (1st Floor) in the NIH Clinical Center (Bdg 10). If an adolescent has participated in research at the NIH before, she and her parent/guardian can go directly to the Pediatric Clinic.
  • If this is the adolescent's first visit to NIH, you will first need to check in at the NIH Clinical Center Admissions (1st Floor, Bdg 10) 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment. Please be sure to leave plenty of time to go through security and to park. After checking in with Admissions, they will direct you to the Pediatric Clinic.
  • The screening visit will last approximately 4 hours.

Before SCREENING 2 VISIT for this study:

  • Participants will need to begin fasting at 10:00 PM the night before their visit to the NIH. This means nothing to eat or drink except for water from the night before at 10:00 PM until we see him/her at the NIH. If the parent is also having a blood draw, they too will need to fast starting at 10:00PM the night before.
  • The morning of their visit, the participant should complete their awakening salivary samples, fill out the form, and bring them in a bag on ice.
  • If the participant has chosen to provide a stool sample, please bring it also in a bag on ice.
  • The participant should wear loose, comfortable clothing and running shoes to this visit, as he/she will be completing a walk/run fitness test.
  • We start the screening visit at 8:15 AM in the 1NW Day Hospital (1st Floor) in the NIH Clinical Center (Bdg 10). The screening visit will last until approximately 4:00 PM.
  • It is optional for a parent/guardian to attend this visit depending if they are participating themselves.

Before EACH SHORT FOLLOW UP VISIT (YEARS 1, 2, 4, and 5) for this study:

  • If the participant has chosen to provide a stool sample, please bring it also in a bag on ice.
  • Please check in at your appointment time in the Pediatric Clinic.
  • The follow-up visits will last until approximately 3 hours.

Before EACH LENGTHIER FOLLOW UP VISIT (YEARS 3 and 6) for this study:

  • Participants will need to begin fasting at 10:00 PM the night before their visit to the NIH. This means nothing to eat or drink except for water from the night before at 10:00 PM until we see him/her at the NIH.
  • The morning of their visit, the participant should complete their awakening salivary samples, fill out the form, and bring them in a bag on ice.
  • If the participant has chosen to provide a stool sample, please bring it also in a bag on ice.
  • The participant should wear loose, comfortable clothing and running shoes to this visit, as he/she will be completing a walk/run fitness test.
  • We start the screening visit at 8:15 AM in the 1NW Day Hospital (1st Floor) in the NIH Clinical Center (Bdg 10). The screening visit will last until approximately 4:00 PM.
  • It is optional for a parent/guardian to attend this visit.

For the supplemental STRESS AND HORMONE STUDY:

  • Adolescents who participate in the supplemental Stress and Hormone study should not eat or drink anything other than water after 12:00 PM (noon) the day of their visit. They may eat a regular lunch before, but nothing for the three hours before their visit.
  • Please also do not engage in any excessive exercise (running, sweating, sports) within three hours prior to your appointment.
  • Please check in for your appointment at 3:00 PM in the Pediatric Clinic.

For both visits during the supplemental SLEEP, ATTENTION, AND EATING STUDY:

  • Please do not consume any caffeine (e.g., soda, coffee, energy drinks, tea, chocolate) for 24 hours before your visit.
  • Participants will need to begin fasting at 10:00 PM the night before their visit to the NIH. This means nothing to eat or drink except for water from the night before at 10:00 PM until we see him/her at the NIH.
  • We start the screening visit at 8:15 AM in the Pediatric Clinic (1st Floor) in the NIH Clinical Center (Bdg 10). The screening visit will last until approximately 12:30 PM.
  • It is optional for a parent/guardian to attend this visit.
